Terracon Ecotech greening the highways of Mumbai-Pune Expressway and NH-4 for key establishments to boost air quality, cut water usage, and ace waste management
In collaboration with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Limited (MSRDC), Terracon Ecotech undertook a transformative initiative spanning four months, focusing on the vibrant expanse of National Highway–4 (NH-4) and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. A vital artery connecting western and southern India, this 1,235 km highway is home to establishments like food courts and petrol pumps. Recognizing the need for environmental responsibility, MSRDC sought Terracon Ecotech‘s expertise to formulate an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for these establishments, aiming to enhance air quality, reduce water usage, and manage waste effectively.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway stands as a crucial six-lane toll expressway, serving as a lifeline for travelers with its establishments providing essential services. These spots not only offer affordable refreshments but also house fueling stations, making them pivotal along the route.
In the pursuit of comprehensive road project development, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Limited (MSRDC) takes charge of everything from planning and design to construction and management. Actively seeking collaborations, inviting tenders, and fostering partnerships with various stakeholders, MSRDC aims to involve individuals and associations in transport project initiatives. Their commitment to excellence is evident in both independent projects and cooperative efforts with corporate bodies, institutions, and government entities, reflecting a dedication to holistic development and meeting State Government objectives.
On the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and NH-4, numerous establishments, including food malls and petrol pumps, operate. Recognizing their environmental responsibilities, these establishments needed programs to enhance air quality, reduce water usage, and effectively manage waste generation. MSRDC aimed to address these concerns by developing an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for these establishments.
The EMP, a vital component of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process, acts as a framework for managing and mitigating potential environmental impacts associated with a project. It outlines strategies for monitoring, controlling, and addressing environmental aspects throughout the project’s lifecycle—before, during, and after implementation. The EMP’s purpose is to ensure sustainable and responsible development while minimizing adverse effects on the surrounding environment.
Terracon Ecotech took charge of crafting the EMP, ensuring that it not only safeguards the environmental ecosystem but also facilitates the continued operation of these vital establishments. By addressing key aspects such as air quality, water usage, and waste management, the project aligns seamlessly with MSRDC’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable development along these bustling transportation routes.
Terracon Ecotech conducted a comprehensive survey along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and NH-4 to identify sources of pollution and negative environmental impacts. This involved assessing various aspects such as air quality, water usage, and waste generation at key establishments along the highways, including food malls and petrol pumps. Special attention was given to wayside amenities to recognize their environmental responsibilities and devise appropriate measures.
We identified negative environmental impacts along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and NH-4, leading to the initiation of comprehensive plans to mitigate these issues. Specifically, measures were taken to address pollution sources and enhance environmental sustainability at wayside amenities. Through these efforts, significant plan was made in eradicating negative environmental impacts and promoting responsible environmental practices along these crucial transportation routes.
