Terracon Ecotech’s Conservation Initiative for Sita Sagar Lake, the historical lake in Datia’s Municipal Limits
In collaboration with the Environmental Planning & Coordination Organization (EPCO), Terracon Ecotech embarked on an ongoing initiative for the conservation and management of Sita Sagar Lake in Datia, Madhya Pradesh. This historical lake, spanning 25 hectares, faced ecological degradation due to anthropogenic activities, necessitating a comprehensive restoration plan.
The restoration efforts, sanctioned by the Nagar Palika Parishad, Datia, focused on controlling pollution at its source and implementing affordable technologies for water treatment before discharge. Anthropogenic activities like improper disposal of solid waste, idol immersion, sewage disposal, etc, that occurred in the lake have been addressed through structural repairs, and water quality improvements are integral components of the action plan. By enhancing the lake’s capacity to hold water, the project not only addressed ecological concerns but also contributed to mitigating water scarcity in the region.
We prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR), incorporating a blend of soft and hard solutions for lake rejuvenation. Detailed project report (DPR) is a comprehensive outline of all the steps and resources that a project needs. It also includes details of the roles and responsibilities, safety measures, and other such information. It is essentially a blueprint of the project plan
This involved monitoring the site, conducting biodiversity assessments, social surveys, and catchment area studies to comprehensively understand the existing conditions.
Terracon Ecotech’s commitment to revitalizing Sita Sagar Lake aligns with the broader goal of preserving ecological, economic, and social values associated with this significant water body. The project aimed to revive the lake’s role in groundwater recharge, recreational activities, and flood control.
The methodology involves a systematic approach, beginning with the collection, review, and analysis of existing data and reports. Site visits and reconnaissance surveys provide on-ground insights, complemented by environmental monitoring for air, water, and soil quality. Biological and socio-economic data are collected and analyzed, while hydrology, geology, and geotechnical studies inform technical aspects. Identification of problems guides the preparation of a comprehensive Restoration & Environment Management Plan. The methodology concludes with the preparation of Bill of Quantities (BOQs) and cost estimates, ensuring a well-planned and budgeted approach.
Implementation of a comprehensive restoration plan, addressing pollution sources, enhancing water quality, and revitalizing ecological health.
Additionally, the project led to the development of beautification plan for the lake and its surrounding areas, fostering ecological sustainability and community engagement.
