Introduction

India’s natural resources conglomerate Vedanta Ltd. Worked with Terracon Ecotech to obtain environmental Clearance approvals for its 41 HC Blocks awarded through the Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP) by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Govt. of India. 

Project Description

Vedanta is a leading global natural resources and technology conglomerate operating across India, South Africa, Liberia and Namibia. Cairn Oil & Gas, Vedanta Limited, is the largest private oil and gas exploration and production company in India, accounting for more than a quarter of India’s domestic crude oil production.It has a world-class resource base, with a current interest in 62 blocks in India. In its operations of 20 years, Cairn has opened 4 frontier basins with numerous discoveries: 38 in Rajasthan alone. The company has been conferred the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) “Sustainable Plus Platinum” label and ranks among the top 10 most sustainable companies in India. 

It operates three Hydrocarbon (HC) blocks namely RJON, Ravva and CB. Further exploration is being planned/in progress at the new offshore block of KG-OSN, within the operating HC blocks. 

The project constrain of 2 years and was carried out in the offices of the Cairn Oil & Gas, Vedanta Ltd. An initial seismic survey was carried out in the blocks and subsequent exploratory & appraisal drilling was undertaken. Environmental approvals such as FC (Forest Clearance), Wildlife Clearance, EC (Environmental Clearance), CRZ clearance, CTE, CTO, and others are necessary as per the applicability. 

Scope of Work

  1. Review and finalize environment-related applications, including Terms of Reference (ToR) for Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) studies, CTE, CTO, HWA, GW extraction, etc. 
  2. Supervise and follow up with contractors or EIA consultants engaged by the company for the process of obtaining EC, CRZ Clearance, and FC. 
  3. Review and finalize EIA/ESIA reports, EMPs/ESMPs (Environment Management Plans/ Environment and Social Management Plans), and other submissions prepared by the EIA consultants. 
  4. Identify relevant environmental statutory requirements and provide support/facilitate their implementation at the site. 
  5. Review and finalize relevant environmental documents, procedures, reports, environmental management & monitoring plans, oil spill contingency plans, etc. 
  6. Track project progress, attend progress review/interface meetings, and monitor open action items.
