Sustainable Transformation by Terracon Ecotech’s GHG Emissions Analysis and Climate-Neutral Roadmap for Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)
Embarking on a crucial partnership with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Terracon Ecotech played a pivotal role in a one-month initiative from November – 2014 to December – 2014. Located at HPCL’s Lube Oil Blending Plant in Silvassa and the New White Oil Terminal in Vizag, this project aimed to fortify HPCL’s resilience to climate change, recognizing the imperative of being “green and ethical” in today’s marketplace.
HPCL is one of the largest integrated Public Sector Undertaking, engaged in the business of refining Crude Oil and marketing of various petroleum products. The objective of HPCL was to quantify GHG emissions in their daily operations which could be used to help them identify improvement areas and assess their environment performance against key performance indicators.
Greenhouse gases are gases in Earth’s atmosphere that trap heat. They are essential for maintaining Earth’s temperature suitable for life through a natural process called the greenhouse effect. Common greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and fluorinated gases. These gases allow sunlight to enter the atmosphere freely, but they trap some of the heat that would otherwise escape from the Earth, leading to the warming of the planet. This process helps to regulate the Earth’s temperature, but human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation, have significantly increased the concentrations of these gases, leading to an enhanced greenhouse effect and global warming. To which Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Footprint Assessment and Mitigation Strategies for Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) was necessary.
Terracon Ecotech conducted a comprehensive analysis, quantifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in HPCL’s daily operations. And crafted a strategic action plan to eliminate barriers hindering the deployment of low-carbon strategies, fostering sustainable development within HPCL’s operations and supply chain.
Terracon Ecotech meticulously defined Green House Gas (GHG) emissions scope and boundaries, ensuring data correctness and completeness. The team conducted GHG inventorization and assessment, establishing a baseline scenario. Benchmarking, identification of key performance indicators, and Green House Gas abatement opportunities which were integral to the project.
Terracon Ecotech also projected future Green House Gas (GHG) emissions, devised mitigation strategies, and provided recommendations to decarbonize. Additionally, the team played a crucial role in Customized Tool Development, capacity building and certification. This was all done to set the stage for the next phase—climate neutrality.
The project encompassed defining GHG emissions scope, data validation, GHG inventorization, establishing baseline emissions, and formulating a footprint assessment methodology. GHG benchmarking, key performance indicators, abatement opportunities, and future emissions projection were identified. Additionally, support was provided for customized tool development, capacity building, certification, and planning the next phase for climate neutrality.
The project yielded a comprehensive understanding of the organization’s emissions profile, actionable recommendations, and a strategic roadmap toward climate neutrality. Key performance indicators and benchmarking facilitated ongoing monitoring. Customized tools and capacity-building efforts ensured effective emissions management, enhancing the organization’s sustainability commitment and progress in addressing climate change.
