Recognizing the ecological impact of mangroves, Terracon Ecotech crafted a participatory ecotourism plan for Mangrove Cell in Thane.
In a visionary collaboration with the Mangrove Cell of Maharashtra Forest Department, Terracon Ecotech embarked on a four-month long journey (January 2017 to April 2017) to cultivate a Participatory Ecotourism Plan for the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary in Mumbai. Recognizing the ecological importance of mangrove forests and the challenges they face, this project aimed not only to conserve but also to empower local communities through sustainable ecotourism initiatives.
Thane Creek, recognized as a Flamingo Sanctuary by the Maharashtra Government, has emerged as a vital hub for coastal ecosystems. This area, the second marine sanctuary in Maharashtra after Malvan, boasts around 200 bird species. In August 2022, Thane Creek achieved the prestigious status of India’s first RAMSAR site within an urban metropolis.
The significance of Thane Creek lies not only in its diverse avian population but also in its rich biodiversity, housing endangered or threatened bird species, various fauna, zooplankton, phytoplankton, butterflies, insects, fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and benthos. The expansive mangrove forest in the area acts as a natural buffer zone, safeguarding the land from storms, tidal surges, seawater invasions, and other natural disasters.
Recognizing the need for heightened awareness, Terracon Ecotech initiated a participatory ecotourism plan for Thane Creek. Participatory ecotourism planning involves collaborating with local communities, stakeholders, and experts to develop sustainable and responsible ecotourism initiatives. This plan, rooted in preserving local and cultural knowledge, aims to foster a deep connection between the community and their natural surroundings.
Terracon Ecotech’s participatory ecotourism plan not only serves to raise awareness about this crucial habitat but also yields promising results. The statistics from the ecotourism plan showcase a harmonious blend of ecological conservation and community empowerment. By determining the sanctuary’s carrying capacity, the project sets a sustainable management roadmap, ensuring the delicate balance of Thane Creek’s ecosystem.
The project initiated with a comprehensive situation analysis, involving site selection and stakeholder identification. Subsequent consultations and exploration of ecotourism potential resulted in proposing diverse activities like mangrove boardwalks, an interpretation center, and engaging boat rides. Implementing a systematic approach, the project ensured the active participation of local communities and stakeholders.
By involving locals in generating livelihoods and support, the project fosters a sustainable coexistence with the mangrove ecosystem. Calculating the sanctuary’s carrying capacity and offering a roadmap for management solidifies the foundation, promoting a balanced approach to Thane Creek’s mangrove conservation and ecotourism.
